Girls Walk the World

We designed and partially authored the book Girls Walk the World, shaping its entire conceptual framework. The cover, inspired by the Wall of Pain memorial, was conceived as a lasting monument — a space of remembrance and responsibility. It bears the names of real victims from Croatia and the wider region. By omitting the author’s name and placing the victims’ names above the title, we aimed to give visibility to lives that were often denied it while they lived.

The book does not follow traditional pagination. Instead, the numbering counts down the average number of women killed each day — starting from 140. This figure, based on the latest UN Women and UNODC data, represents the daily average of women and girls killed by intimate partners or family members. The countdown reaches zero on the final page, symbolizing the collective goal of ending violence against women. Each number is marked with a red dot — a quiet yet urgent reminder of lost lives and the need for action.

Each poem is accompanied by a powerful illustration by academic painter and illustrator Valentina Talijan. Through carefully chosen plants, each artwork symbolically reflects the theme of the poem — healing, protection, trauma, or memory. The plants are not mere decoration, but a visual extension of the collection’s message — a tribute to the strength, pain, and resistance of women.
